It provides a means for users to construct clear pathways through the resources linked together on a concept map and the ability to control the sequence in which resources are viewed. ![]() It allows users to search, browse, retrieve content from digital repositories, and upload resources into these systems. Figure 1: Concept Map in VUE VUE is a concept mapping application designed as an integrated digital library application. While these and other products share a number of common features, they lack important functionality necessary to maximize the curricular uses of digital library content Visual Understanding Environment (VUE), shown in Figure 1, is Copyright is held by the author/owner(s). Concept-mapping software such as Cmap developed by the University of West Florida and Inspiration are concept mapping tools that have been used extensively by teachers. Concept maps have been a part of the constructivist landscape of education since the early 1980 s and research has demonstrated that concept maps are superb tools for facilitating learning. Tools that can allow teachers and learners to access and structure the content from these libraries in a meaningful way add great value to the educational process. Keywords Digital Library, VUE, Interoperability, Concept Maps Tufts University has several collections of valuable digital resources stored in Digital libraries that are used be faculty to enhance teaching and learning. General Terms Design, Experimentation, Human Factors. Categories and Subject Descriptors H.3.7 : Collection, Dissemination, Standards, System Issues, User Issues. Essentially VUE is a concept mapping application that facilitates structuring and semantically connecting electronic content drawn from file systems, the World Wide Web or a digital repository. a new learning application that facilitates thinking with and learning from digital resources. The resulting content maps can then be viewed and exchanged online. Using VUE's concept mapping interface, faculty and students design customized semantic networks of digital resources drawing from digital libraries, local files and the Web. VUE provides a visual environment for structuring, presenting, and sharing digital information and an OKI-compliant software bridge for connecting to FEDORA-based digital repositories.
